Ad Hoc Indian Mounds Committee
Role: Develop and recommend to the Village Board appropriate policies to guide the preservation and restoration of the many Indian mounds that are located on various parcels of land owned by the Village. The Village Board will rely upon these recommendations in creating plans to protect and preserve the existing mounds, to establish restoration priorities, and to allocate resources to undertake these activities. In developing their recommendations, it is expected that the Committee will: collaborate with the Wisconsin Historical Society to evaluate the condition of and to identify any potential threats to the Indian mounds; review the restoration policies and experiences of other organizations and evaluate their applicability to McFarland; specify a clear set of required, recommended, and desirable goals to be met and guidelines to be followed in the restoration of the mounds; determine a priority order in which restoration efforts should be undertaken; and suggest ways to better interpret the history of the Indian mounds, to educate the public, and to promote/inform the public about this extensive and valuable cultural/historical resource that exists in McFarland.
