Pleas

The Judge will next ask if you are prepared to enter a plea to the charge(s). You also have the right to request a continuance. You have three Plea choices:

  1. Guilty—if you plead Guilty, you admit to all of the charges and the Court will impose a fine or forfeiture (monetary sentence) as explained below.
  2. No Contest—if you plead No Contest, the Court will find you Guilty. By entering a Plea of No Contest you neither admit nor deny the charge(s), but you state that you do not choose to contest the charge(s). The effect is the same as a Plea of Guilty except that the finding of guilt, as a result of this Plea, may not be used against you in civil court.
  3. Not Guilty—if you plead Not Guilty, your case will be set for a pre-trial conference with the municipal prosecutor. In most cases, the pretrial will be heard on the same date and time as your initial appearance.

If you are in doubt of which Plea to enter, do not hesitate to say “Not Guilty.”
