The McFarland Police Department participates in the Dane County Driving While Intoxicated Task Force. This consortium consists of several other Dane County Police Agencies, including:
City of Madison
Town of Madison
University of Wisconsin-Madison
As part of the Zero in Wisconsin Program, the Task Force conducts deployments throughout the year specifically focusing on drunk driving enforcement. That said, one of the main goals of the program is not just enforcing the law, but rather public awareness and the prevention of drunk driving. Enforcement zones are marked with visible signage, and deployments are promoted via local media and social media outlets.
As a testimonial to the effectiveness of the program, in 2014 a deployment took place during a local event that included a beer tent. On the evening before the deployment, few vehicles were left behind after closing. The following evening, when the deployment took place, over 60 vehicles were left parked after the event closed.
This is the result we are looking for, an awareness of the risks involved with drunk driving, and wise decisions made not to drive and perhaps take a cab, or utilize other means of getting home.
