Home Alterations for Seniors

Independent Living, Inc.Aging well at home can be challenging for older adults. It's the "little things" that were taken for granted and are now becoming difficult:

  • Getting into and out of bed that's too high or too low
  • Balancing while getting into or out of bed
  • Being able to climb safely in and out of the bathtub
  • Walking up or down stairs that have become uneven or lack a handrail
  • Stepping on a step stool and reaching for that special bowl or hat
  • Getting into and out of a vehicle

All of these scenarios can lead to a fall and reduce one's activity level and independence. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one out three adults age 65 and older falls. Falls are the leading cause of fatal injury. Over half of falls resulting in death occur in the home. Costs associated from hospitalizations and rehabilitation after falls are on the rise. Fall injuries are among the 20 most expensive medical conditions, and the average hospital cost for a fall injury is over $30,000.

Prevention & Planning

Prevention and planning includes identifying where potential risks exist. Do-it-yourselfers can start with a checklist like the one available on the Independent Living, Inc. "Home Safety Modification" page. Of more help is a professional safety and accessibility evaluation. This assessment will produce a list of options that you may do yourself or with help from others who specialize in making home environments functional and safe.

Independent Living, Inc. is a local expert in home modifications for seniors. They serve all residents of Dane County. Those with limited budgets need not let that prevent them from exploring needed accommodations. In Madison and Dane County, qualified individuals and eligible households can apply for federally funded grants dedicated toward increasing the accessibility of older housing. The grants are administered by Independent Living.

Common services building custom-made wheelchair ramps, installing custom-fit couch and chair risers, adding hand railings and building or rebuilding steps. Specific suggestions for each household are discussed during the home assessment.
