To change owner information on a property tax bill, please contact the Dane County Register of Deeds directly at 608-266-4141 or visit the Dane County Register of Deeds website for more information. Village staff does not have the authority to change names on tax bills.
The property owner is responsible for payment of property taxes. If you have a mortgage on your property, contact your lender for information on how payment from your escrow account will be handled.
Review the check carefully to determine if it needs to be endorsed. Checks made out to the property owner and the Village must be endorsed by the property owner before the Village can cash them. If the check is made out directly to you the property owner, you should deposit the funds into your back account and issue a check to the Village for the amount owed.
If the check is written to both the property owner and the Village, the check should be mailed to the Village with your remittance slip. After the check has cleared, the Village will issue an overpayment to the property owner at the next Village Board meeting. All refunds are issued to the property owner.

You should read the closing documents to determine if taxes were pro-rated as a credit during closing. The property owner is responsible for any taxes which were not paid or credited as of closing.
